PSB Tournament wrap-up, NH Auckland boys

Hello All Boys and Parents,

I hope you all enjoyed the PSB tournament, despite the weather. I think we were fortunate to get in three days. It was great to be able to walk around and see the teams competing, boys enjoying their cricket and the positive atmosphere that existed around the teams.

For those of you who have not read the previous blog entry: North Harbour Tournament Statistics, Jim Kelly Cup I encourage you to do so in conjunction with this blog post.

Team Results

The North Harbour team results have been very strong. The two “A” sides this season have finished second (Black A) and fourth (Burgundy A). By comparison the two “A” sides last season finished fourth and fifth. Black A was due to play Manukau on the last day on what would have effectively been a final.

In the development section, Burgundy A is fourth and Black A sixth out of eight teams, comparable results to last year.

The results should also be considered in the context that North Harbour has similar junior playing numbers to both Central District and Eastern District and that we field four teams in total thereby diluting our strength particularly across the “A” division.

Black A game v Central Districts

In the Black A game v Central Districts the Black team bowled and fielded exceptionally. It was the best bowling and fielding performance I have seen from our boys, absolutely outstanding from fielding positions to walking in, to commitment, to good fielding technique, to bowlers bowling a good attacking line and length consistently. I was very proud of you.

Gray’s 100

The other highlight for me was Gray Hardy’s century. His century was only the second North Harbour century in the tournament since 2003. His batting was outstanding for an opener, a solid start that provided the platform with his run rate picking up through the innings with good solid attacking cricket shots. Gray was part of a 170 run partnership for the second wicket with Gray’s batting partner assisting him by turning the strike over and providing sound and positive advice.

Individual Performers

Cricket is not a particularly fair game. Some boys in a team get placed in positions that are “better” positions than others, for example, a number three batsman is in a better position that a number six. By the same token boys have often earned these positions. In many cases our “leading boys” took their opportunities at the tournament.

I know the Coaches were planning changes in the last two days to give other boys more opportunity until the weather intervened, and there are boys particularly in the mid to lower order in Black A who did not get as much batting as we'd have liked.

Well done boys, many congratulations, the boys above are some of our hardest working young cricketers. The eight boys selected for Auckland surpasses the six from last year.

It is easy on one hand to say that for those of you who did not make the Auckland team this year, and a number of you must have been close, not to be too disappointed. The reality is that I’m sure that some of you having set the goal or target of making the Auckland team are very disappointed.

I do stand by what was said at the capping ceremony – this is only one step in your cricketing journey, set yourself the goal again, work really hard on your game and you can get there.

For those boys who have made Auckland, it is also time for you to step up and work harder at your games in the coming year, there will be a bunch of determined boys after your positions from all the Districts.

We are fortunate in the group to have excellent Coaches, and it can become a cliché to continue to thank them. The boys should though be very grateful for the work put into them by hard working and dedicated coaches.

So to Peter Schierhout, Grant Mckenzie, Amita Weerakoon, Marcus Williams, Layne Young and Daryl Quinn, many thanks again guys from us all for your efforts over the past three years and in particular the lead up to and including the tournament.

It was also great to see so many parents out at the tournament, supporting your own boy, supporting their team, and helping with all of the things that make it a success. I thought we had an excellent parent group at each game I got to.

Finally it has been a privilege to be the North Harbour Convenor for this age group over the past three years. The Year 8 age boys now move into one age group - Year 9/10, and the Year 7 boys move into Year 8.

The Year 9/10 Convenor, who will be a parent usually drawn from the Year 10 age group, will be in contact with you regarding North Harbour representation over the coming year.

In terms of my own ongoing involvement, I will be able to assist the Year 9/10 Convenor with information on the boys in our age group.

In the meantime boys continue to enjoy your cricket.

North Harbour Tournament Statistics, Jim Kelly Cup

Each year Stephen Jones, who is a previous long-standing Chairperson of North Harbour Cricket, and the current Chair of Cricket at Westlake Boys High School prepares the North Harbour Primary Schoolboys Statistics which includes NH's top results from previous tournaments.

Many congratulations to Angus Mckenzie not only for his outstanding tournament performance but his performances over the past two years. He is a very well deserved winner of the Jim Kelly Cup. The Jim Kelly Cup is a NH Trophy awarded to the top performing NH Player at the PSB tournament

Stephen also noted the following batting and bowling highlights in relation to North Harbour this year in contrast to other North Harbour PSB tournaments:

Key Batting Highlights:

· Only three days play this year (generally each year will lose on average one day’s play), yet some outstanding results

· Angus McKenzie with 192 runs – second highest North Harbour tournament total since 2003

· Gray Hardy scored only the second century for North Harbour at this tournament since 2003

· Angus McKenzie batting average of 92 from 3 innings is a new North Harbour record (since we started keeping records in 2003) and Benjamin Beecroft is in third place

Key Bowling Highlights:

· Zakk Finlay 11 wickets second equal highest since 2003. Grant Celliers with 10 is third equal

· Zakk Finlay bowling average of 5.7 is a new record (since 2003). Grant Celliers is in third place

· Zakk Finlay took two 5 wicket bags: 6/18 and 5/23. Toby Robb also had a 5 wicket haul: 6/30

and in relation to the PSB tournament and comparision to performances from boys from other Districts:

A Section:

· Angus scored the most runs for all Districts with Benjamin in third place

· Gray second highest individual score all Districts

· Grant’s 10 wickets is the most at this year’s tournament. Toby Robb in second place.

Development Section:

· Zakk Finlay in first equal place with 11 wickets

Injury: Team Changes

It is with real disappointment that I have to announce that Adrian Young will be unavailable for the Burgundy A side for the tournament. Adrian has been a top performer in Club Cricket and for North Harbour in the past few years, and, in my mind, was our second best boy performing boy heading into the tournament.

Adrian has a heel injury that will not allow him to bowl, but he is going to take up an opening batting position in the Burgundy development side. Greg Vukets has been asked to join the Burgundy A side. I am sure both boys will make the most of their respective new opportunities, and, I'm sure we will see Adrian back and firing at the bowling crease before too long.

The top order delivered 25 runs between them which put pressure on our ability to deliver a competitive total. We were all out in the 47^th over for 117.

PSB Capping - Tuesday December 6th

Clothing will be on sale from 6pm. There is no eftpos available so either cash or cheques please. North Harbour Cricket is providing a subsidy in excess of $3,000 towards the PSB clothing cost.

Capping will get under way at 7pm. The U15 girls capping will also be taking place.

Dress for capping is your full whites and cricket shoes. If you have played in the PSB tournament for North Harbour before wear your North Harbour shirt. If not either a plain white shirt, your club shirt or school playing shirt.

The venue is Takapuna Rugby Club - next door to Takapuna Cricket Club.

Your tournament fee of $10.00 should be provided at the clothing table. The $10 is compulsory and will be used to provide for the photograph of the team taken at the tournament. Again, cash or cheques only.

The bar is also open.

The North Harbour Primary Schoolboys teams for the Whitecross Primary Schoolboys Christmas Tournament have been selected.

Well done to those who have made one of the teams, I am sure you will represent North Harbour with pride. There will be some boys disappointed at not making a team, it is worth you remembering that you will have many more opportunities to make North Harbour tournament teams in coming years.

An observation on the batting boys that your Coach has likely covered off, but to reinforce it, turning the strike over by scoring singles and running positively is a very imporant part of building a good score. It appeared to me that we were two speeds today - block, or hit for four. There is no point playing out a good over with a series of drives into the covers. We are there to score runs not look good - scoring ugly is fine, use soft hands and drop the ball down, angle your bat and direct it into a gap. We then need to back that shot up with good positive running. Today I saw too many occasions where a shot was hit, and a run could have been taken, but wasn't. Back-up, look for runs, run hard, call clearly, trust your partner. Be positive when it comes to running! It will make a big difference. Something for you guys to work on. Well done overall though, a a top result. Craig

The following are draft teams for the fixture on Sunday November 27 2011 against Western Districts. The teams may change prior to Sunday. The fixture is to be held at Huapai Domain, with a 10.30am start so please be there at 9.45am.

We are playing on pitches three and five. Pitch four is the main artificial wicket – that is not available to us as a Senior 20/20 game is commencing on that pitch at 3pm.

Burgundy A is to play on pitch three, located at the back right of the domain, and Burgundy development playing on pitch five located lower back left of the domain. Cars may be parked down in that area by the tennis courts.

Results v Eastern Districts, November 20th

A win for both the North Harbour Black "A" side and the Black development side today.

North Harbour Black A

Our North Harbour Black A team had a deserved win against Eastern Districts A side at Huapai Domain. Well done boys!

The game today was a real mixture of “The Good – The Bad – The Ugly” .......

We won the toss & elected to bat. Our openers (Toby & Gray) put on a 50 partnership for the first wicket. At 51-1 after 20 overs, the game was heading in the right direction (still at least 10 runs short of our target). We lost 3 wickets in the next 8 overs & at 69-4 our “solid start” was looking shaky! An urgent toilet break lead to a forced batting order change & whilst Ash was otherwise occupied, Keegan strode to the wicket & joined Benjamin at the crease. 82 runs later the partnership between Benjamin & Keegan was broken – not before Keegan had smashed 46 off 42 & Benjamin had steadied the ship with his 46 off 82 balls. This proved to be a match winning batting partnership that gave our innings the momentum it needed. After patiently waiting for his turn to bat, Ash scored a quick 19* off 24 balls. Our total of 181-6 was always going to be a tough total to defend on a good track with a reasonably quick outfield.

Our turn to bowl & field ...... Keegan started with a wicket in the first over (even though coach Peter got this wrong with wind direction & choice of ends). However, after some changes & a re-focus session at drinks, we were able to contain their batting effort to +/- 3.5 runs per over for most of the game. Nathan managed to snare two very valuable wickets in his opening spell (2-11 off 5). At the other end Jack was superb & as economical as ever – Jack finished with figures of 10 overs 1-12 (absolutely spot-on). Matt gave it everything & certainly deserved a few wickets for his efforts! Ryan & Benjamin bowled well & the off / leg spin combination halted the run rate with Ryan eventually finishing with 5-16 off 8 overs.

Our fielding had it all – good / bad / brilliant / awful ..... There were some outstanding catches & moments of fielding brilliance. Overthrows, diving over the ball & simply not getting behind the ball cost us 3 boundaries & many singles (at least 20 runs given away). Not good enough! The wicket keepers (Ash & Cam) were much improved this week & they will hopefully keep raising the standard. Nathan was superb in the field – well done. Ryan & Gray held onto a couple of excellent catches. Matt was enthusiastic as ever & Benjamin & Giles were kept busy in the point / cover region.

Things to improve on for our next game:

· Achieve our target run rate:

o 0-10 = 30 runs

o 11-20 = 35 runs

o 21-30 = 40 runs

o 31-40 = 50 runs

o 41-50 = 60 runs

o TOTAL = 215 runs

· Running between the wickets by our top order batsmen.

· Batting technique (play straight to a good length straight ball).

o Three batsmen were caught playing across the line.

· Bowl one side of the wicket (off-side channel).

· Bowlers are all bowling too many short deliveries! Pitch it up!

· Ground fielding & throwing in to the keeper.

· Build an awareness of the game at all times (for example):

o Am I in the right fielding position for this bowler / batsman?

o What is this batsman’s weakness?

o Where can I look to score singles (gapping)?

o How can we keep this batsman on strike?

o How many balls are left in the over?

o How many runs are required for victory at this moment?

o Where can we score runs off this bowler?

o Etc.

North Harbour Black development v Eastern Districts development

On a partly cloudy and a windy day at the Huapai Domain pitch # 3, the Eastern Districts B decided to bat first against the NH PSB Black B. With these ideal seam bowling conditions, there were some wonderful seam bowling from Niko Weerakoon, Sam Tither, Mitchell Watt, Ben Kennedy and Schalk van der Merwe, Eastern Districts were five wickets down for 62 runs midway through their innings. Then, due to some lusty hitting by Jeremy 54 runs (9 x 4, 2 x6) and aided by some sloppy fielding from the Black B team, Eastern Districts ended up with 162 all out in the 45th over. Schalk, Ben and Nick Thompson ended up with two wickets a piece and the Stott twins, Jason and Justin were outstanding around the field with their catching and ground fielding.

In reply, Black B innings got off to a great start with an opening partnership of 63 runs off 13 overs between Josh Hilliam (44 runs) and Ethan Schaumkel (21 runs). This fine effort was followed by some very sensible batting from Schalk (35), Quinn Sunde (12), Matthew Wood (16) and un unbroken quick fire partnership by Nick and Ashton Howard.

Black B won by 5 wickets with 13 overs to spare.

Capping Ceremony - December 6th

We will be endeavouring to name the four NH PSB teams on the evening of Sunday December 4th.

The North Harbour PSB (and NH Girls) capping ceremony will take place on: Tuesday 6th December.

The capping is to be held at the Takapuna Rugby Clubrooms.

You will have been sent by email a pre capping order form for you to use, if you wish, and a price list of the clothing. Clothing will be on sale from 6pm. Cash and cheques only.

The Capping ceremony will commence at 7pm, probably with NH Girls first followed by NH PSB boys.

The Bar will also be open.

NH Burgundy A v Counties Manukau A

A win to Counties Manukau.

NH won the toss and decided to bowl and get some practice chasing a total. With an excellent opening spell of swing bowling from Grant Celliers CM were 2/12 with Grant on a hat trick. As the game progressed we were a little guilty of bowling two lines and two lengths and CM got away on us scoring 239. Grant was the pick of the bowlers with 2/40 from 10 overs and Liam Brown 2/49 off 10.

Chasing 240 at a little under 5 an over our top order didn't fire and we were 5/49. The middle and lower order stabilized the innings with Kieran Young getting a well compiled 58 and Max Dewe a quick fire 15. With the game effectively gone there was some good batting practice in the lower order. NH were bowled out in the 50th over for 151 so a win to CM by 8 runs.

In summary we were too wayward with our bowling and we definitely need to tighten this up before the PSB so our batters have a chance of chasing a realistic total.

A couple of tight wins for the Black teams in the weekend. Well done boys, understanding how to win close games is a good sign.

PSB Black "A"

Before we review our match, a special thank you to the parents & supporters for your help & encouragement this weekend. Without the dedication of our “parent group”, the boys would not be able to enjoy these wonderful inter-district tournaments. Thank you!

After losing the toss & being asked to field first, our bowlers kept the pressure on the Northland batsmen. All of our bowlers had very tidy opening spells – Keegan was especially menacing. Unfortunately wickets did not come easily, but nor did we concede many runs for the first 42 overs. At no stage during the first 42 overs did we allow the run rate to go above 2.5 runs per over. However, our final 8 overs went for 61 runs (7.6 RPO). Asher grabbed two stumpings off some very good bowling from Benjamin. Nathan was exceptional in the field with one brilliant catch (it was a beauty), one very tidy run-out & he showed real enthusiasm. Ryan S also took a good catch in the slips. In the end, Northland set us a reasonable total of 166 / 7.

Things to work on:- we dropped a couple of catches, our ground fielding was not good enough, we bowled 27 wides, we need to look more closely at our field placements & we need to lift the intensity.

Our batting effort, although solid, was not perfect. We set ourselves targets for a reason. Chasing 3.32 runs per over from the start, we let ourselves fall behind this target. At the 40th over we needed six runs an over to win! Asher & Giles came together with the score on 97/4 in the 36th over. Needing more than 5 runs per over, these two batsmen crafted a match winning partnership. They ran hard, looked for the gaps & hit the bad ball to the boundary. The winning runs came in the 48th over. A well deserved victory for the team & they certainly enjoyed the win!

NH PSB Black development

NH PSB Black B was all out for 62 runs against a tidy seam bowling attack on a good pitch at Kensington park in Whangerei. When we were all out just after noon, the opposition were suggesting that they knocked the required runs off in no time and play a T20 game against us after the expected early finish.

However, our Black B team had different ideas. Our plans were to attack as " attack is the best form of defence" and to concentrate on a tidy bowling and fielding effort. After Jason Stott (1 for 7) and Niko Weerakoon (1 for 7) have dismissed the openers with some demanding overs, Mitchell Watts settled in to a very economical spell.. With the support of Matthew Wood (1 for 6) and Sam Tither, Mitchell bowled a match winning spell of 8.4 - 2 - 14 - 5.

Our bowling efforts were well supported with a brilliant fielding effort. Campbell Knowles taking four great catches at slips and a tidy wicket keeping effort from Josh Hilliam. Our attacking mind set on the field also helped us to create two run outs through Schalk van der Merwe and also due to the tidy fielding efforts of Ben Kennedy and Justin Stott.

Due to these magnificent efforts on the field, Black B team beat Northland B by 9 runs.

NH Team Selection Policy, Code of Conduct

Hi All Boys and Parents

As we're working our way into our fixture list I thought it a good time to raise for all again (and for some whom have never seen them at previously) the NH Selection Policy and Code of Conduct.

Please take the opportunity, with your boy, to read through those documents again.

I think some of the important points to raise from a Convenor's perspective at this time are:

1. Boys to sit together as a team away from parents. I'd like us to a conscious effort from now on for Coaches/Parents/Boys to achieve this in each game,

2. Umpire's decision. It is extremely important to accept an umpires decision and not show any dissent or any questioning of an umpire. Most decisions will be right, some wrong. Either way, total respect for an umpire is very important.

3. Coaches role. The Coaches role (under the current regime) is to select what they beleive is their best team and coach the team in practices and on game day. We are fortunate to have skilled and dedicated parent coaches, most of whom are very well qualified. On game day Coaches should be left to do their job, and if there are ever any issues with selection/boys getting a fair go/any related issues all parents are welcome to discuss those with the Convenor.

4. Look like cricketers, play like cricketers. A reminder to look tidy out there, particularly shirts tucked in. Once we get our North Harbour gear at capping we'll all have the same gear and look great, any improvement in the meantime would be useful.

Thank you to everyone to so far, we are making great progress.

After winning the toss & electing to bat, our batsmen never looked dominant against a reasonably average bowling attack. Manukau bowled 22 wides & 6 no balls. We did not show the urgency or commitment required to score runs. Our running between the wickets was poor & the boys have not applied the coaching points that were drilled into them during our indoor spring training sessions. At no stage during the game did we exceed 3 runs per over. We need to see a marked improvement during our next fixture & all the boys have been made aware of this fact.

At the change of innings our bowlers & fielders knew that we had to bowl out Manukau if we stood any chance of winning. Our effort & commitment with the ball was in complete contrast to our batting. Urgency, commitment, enthusiasm & a belief that we could win the game soon resulted in regular wickets. Aggressive bowling from Keegan, Matt & Rysie combined with some of the tightest line & length bowling we have seen from Jack, Nathan & Ryan S gave us the result we wanted in the end! Well done Jack for your outstanding bowling effort 4-13 from 7.2 overs.

In summary Burgundy played well on the day. Batting was solid at the top of the order with Quinn batting to second drinks break and following the batsmen kept the run rate at around 4 an over. Bowling excelled with Grant and Angus showing excellent control while Adrian and Kieran kept runs in check later in the innings. Fielding (especially ground fielding) in general was slightly below par but all and all I was very happy with the boys commitment on the day.

We're into our first fixture for the season this coming Monday October 24th. The fixture is an opportunity for the boys to get their season underway and for the Coaches to judge the form of the boys.

The following four teams have been selected for the intersquad fixture/trial. The core of the Black A and Burgundy A teams are likely to stay in place for the season, but there are still plenty of opportunites for selection in these teams.

PSB Spring training, Saturday September 10th

There is apparently a game of Rugby on this Saturday at North Harbour Stadium and they want to close some roads down - but I've spoken with Stadium management and all is well.

One traffic lane will be left open on the Albany highway and we will be able to get into and out of the University grounds. The Stadium people will also be using the car-park for disabled parking etc, but we should be fine for parks.

We have a few boys out of the Burgundy squad primarily due to injury, so we've got boys coming in from outside the squads to fill those places for the next few sessions.

I am endeavouring to get a specialist spin bowling Coach in for the boys on Saturday, it is 50/50 at this stage.

With the wicket-keepers you've been working on the basics the last two sessions. The basics are critical but we will try and get you into your gloves and into the nets for at least part of the next session to break it up a bit.

The PSB Spring training sessions start next Saturday August 27th. The full timetable is as follows:

ACA PSB Winter Academy – North Harbour Group

The following boys were selected to receive an invitation to the new High Performance ACA PSB Winter Academy programme, this year operating on a decentralised basis in the five different districts.

The ten week programme has been designed by the ACA coaches. ACA coaches will attend some sessions with the weekly programme directed by a local specialist coach and assistant. The North Harbour programme will be held at the Massey University, Albany Nets.

The programme commences on Sunday June 26th and continues each Sunday until it concludes on Sunday August 28th. Each session will be from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

To those boys who have made a squad, well done, you now have the opportunity to get some coaching and help, work hard and improve your cricket. A reminder though - selection in a training squad is no guarantee of actual selection for a PSB team, those selection decisions will be made next season.

To those boys who have not been selected in a training squad, you are not out of the running for a PSB place later this year. We will still be looking at all boys for final selection based upon your form in the new season. Should any of you who have not made it into these training squads want to work on your game over Spring contact me if you want to and I can suggest area's you need to work on, and help put a program in place for you.

Dear All,

Congratulations on all the effort that you have all put in so far. The last couple of weeks have left us (the selectors) with some very difficult decisions. There will be some that will be disappointed but, we all need to pull together in our teams to make sure that we do ourselves and North Harbour proud in whatever team/position we have been chosen. It is an honour to represent your district and you should make sure that you give 100% throughout the tournament.

Attached is the final tournament squads; these are the teams that you will be representing at the tournament and with whom you will be capped tomorrow evening. I look forward to seeing you at the capping ceremony.

The cost is $15 for a photo and you will need to make sure that you let your team coach know that you want one and give them $15 (cash only) on capping nigth (tomorrow). I will take all the cash and make a bank transfer to the photographer from my personal account, which is why I am asking for cash and that it be paid in advance.

Black A/B v. Western

Two excellent wins for the Black sides. Both chasing similar totals of 200 plus, both finding themselves with the balance tipped against them but both pulling through to win at the end. Very positive performances for all involved and very exciting to watch.

Burgundy A/B v. Manukau

Manukau were the strongest district in both the A and B tournaments last year, so these games were key to judging where we were this season. Manukau District is predominantly Howick Pakuranga CC with Papatoetoe CC and with both HPCC Y8 Prem sides at the top of the tables in the two ACA leagues, they were always going to be a tough proposition. In particular, the Manukau B team look be to be an extremely strong unit and showed as much on the day.

A very good win and confidence booster for the Burgundy A side with everyone contributing in some form. Definitely not the polished product but, looking good for the tournament proper.

Unfortunately against any side at this level, let alone a really good one, 53 extras is not good enough. The bowling needs to be more consistent with fewer short balls; we have spoken about this before and the importance of bowling full and straight. That being said, they are a very strong side and we can take positives of batting our overs and some good partnerships both batting and bowling. Between now and the tournament, we can really change our attitude towards fielding and the consistency of our bowling, if we are able to do this, I strongly believe that we have the players to be able to compete and give the other districts a real run for their money. We can slide in to the tournament under the radar but, have shown against Hamilton that we have the ability - positivity and teamwork are our friends!

Dear All,

Just a gentle reminder to all parents, that the coaches are going to be coming to you to discuss a tournament roster. We will be looking for roles that cover all skills but, the key ones will be scoring and umpiring.

We cannot do this without you and I know that, whilst you may not be jumping with joy at the chance of scoring/umpiring, you will do your best to help out the coaches who have worked so hard during the pre-tournament and, obviously, the tournament itself.

Don't forget the capping ceremony is on Tuesday 7th December at Takapuna Rugby Club from 7pm. Bring your cameras and cash/cheques (no eftpos facilities) for the gear.

Keys to Success

In the run in to the tournament, you must start focusing on raising your performance levels. I have discussed this in the posts below but, really need you to focus on putting the words in to practice. In particular:

Partnerships: Bowling and batting partnerships are key to team performance. You must keep the pressure on when you bowl, sometimes you will need to sacrifice pace for good length and look to bowl dot balls. When batting you must turn the strike over. I will be looking at the scorebooks for evidence of good partnerships. Work together.
Positivity: As a team and an individual you must remain positive about your performance. Put the poor shot/ball behind you and focus on what you are going to do. Use your imagination to think about how the ball is going to leave your hand or bat. Bowlers, imagine the ball leaving your hand, the seam, the shape of delivery as it pitches and hits the top of offstump. Batsmen, picture the ball leaving the bowlers hand and imagine the sound and the feel of the ball as it is strikes the middle of the bat. As a team, make sure that you keep positive throughout the game - no negative thoughts or words. All positive and all about us!
Every ball is an event: When fielding, every run you save by diving or chasing a ball, is one more they have to score and/or one less you do. Every time you back up the stumps and stop and overthrow, is a run saved. When you are batting, every time you push the field and score a single because your partner was backing up or called well or when you play the ball in to the gap instead of smashing it to a fielder is one more to yours and one less to them. At the end of the game, when you add all the little events up, it will make the difference between winning and losing.

We all believe in your ability, you need to believe it! Play fair and with respect, play hard and remain positive!

I am compiling the scores for a full update but, I think it would be fair to say that all teams were given a "wake up call" to the level they need to be at for the tournament.

In all three games we did not compile enough runs to compete. This is not Saturday cricket; where you can expect to get non-bowlers coming on and serving up some buffet bowling; you need to work hard for your runs. This is a mental struggle and also a realisation that you must know where your scoring areas are ... turning the strike over is absolutely essential at this level and dot-ball strings can kill a batting total. You must learn to run (and call) better and know where the singles are.

I have not had a look at the strike rates but, can guarantee that we did not work the ball around. I saw some very talented boys playing (and admiring) wonderful shots struck directly to fielders for no runs. You must learn to score ugly and the top five batsmen need to score most of the runs at a good rate - you cannot expect the lower order to come in with 15 overs to go and score at 5-6 per over.

Bowling and fielding is always going to be difficult when trying to restrict a team to a small total but, you all need to be more aggressive in the field. Every ball is an event and every run you stop is one less you (or one more they) need to score. I saw some good fielding and catching but, there was not enough desire and anticipation for this level; watch the way that a good fielder moves and makes catches and stops look easy. It is not because they are lucky and are in the right place at the right time - they anticipate the shot from the way the batsmen move their feet and they move before the ball is hit. Bowlers need to be patient and bowl consistently good length balls - wickets are tough to come by and you need to work a batsmen out. Good length bowling is absolutely essential at this level (even at the expense of line), you must be able to maintain pressure; a good length ball that is slightly wide, is still going to get a batsmen thinking about the shot he needs to play, a long hop allows him to hit the ball where he wants, whatever the line!

I am convinced that this is not a technical issue; they are not technically better than we are. We need to step up our levels of intensity and start playing like this means something as opposed to being just another game. You must enjoy your cricket but this does not mean that I will accept poor performances. I am also aware that many of you are new to 50 over cricket; it is tiring and you need to be fitter (physically and mentally). This is only going to get harder (5 days of cricket at the tournament) so make sure that you look after your bodies ... hydrate and eat well before, during and after the game. Do not over play, you are young and developing. Make sure that you rest well and keep your practice to a short high intensity - you need to be fresh for the game.

I challenge you all to make the step up to PSB cricket, you would not be in the sides if we did not believe you can do it. So let's make sure that the next two games against Manukau and Western show a higher intensity and reflect our skills and commitment.

"One thing our innings in this match underlined was the reality that it is very hard to make good totals in one-day matches without good partnerships. It's something we regularly talk about during team meetings, and I felt that this game showed that we've taken this lesson on board. It was important after Watto was dismissed so early that Tim Paine and I got things back on track, even though the wicket was playing some tricks. Then Mitch and Brett Lee and then Mitch and Nathan Hauritz worked really well together during the final 10 overs of our innings.

Partnerships were a key when we bowled too, especially in the latter stages when we closed the game out in efficient fashion. Those last few overs have been a bit of an Achilles heel for us over the years, so I took a lot of satisfaction from the way we took 6-55 from the final 61 deliveries of the game, to clinch the game by 50 runs with 19 balls to spare."

PSB Trial 16th October (Massey University)

Availability
If selected for one of four the PSB teams (Burgundy A/B and Black A/B), you will need to be available to play pre-tournament fixtures starting on Labour Monday (25 October) up to the tournament. These are generally every other week (Sunday) but, your commitment will depend on whether you are in Black or Burgundy, so it is not possible to give you the dates until the teams have been selected.

Trial Format
There are 48 places available (4 teams x 12 players), 26 boys have attended the academy and we will be looking for another 22 from the trial. The trial format will involve all attendees moving through a session on batting, bowling and fielding. The selectors will be looking for all round skills and a good attitude; the A teams require more specialised positions than the B teams but, clearly there needs to be a good balance between bowlers and batsmen. Please make sure that you bring full kit and remember there are going to be 30 other kitbags at Massey, so make sure that you look after your kit and keep it neat and tidy outside the nets – you will notice that this will be a theme running through to the tournament; keep your kit all together as a team and neat and tidy.

Selection and beyond
At the development (B team), the intention through the tournament is to make sure that every gets a fair go – it is a long tournament 5 games x 50 overs and we want to make sure that bowlers get a good bowl and batsmen get a chance to bat. However, often the issue at this level is that so many players do both ... Basically, we have to try and manage this as best we can but it does mean that if you bat top 5, do not expect to bowl and vice versa, if you bowl 10 overs do not expect to bat. The coaches are looking to balance the team during the tournament so at everyone leaves the tournament having had a chance to shine, I am there to make sure that this happens. The teams will be selected for the first game on the 25th October (an inter-squad game at Wainoni). Once selected in either Burgundy or Black, you will tend to stay within that colour but, there will be opportunities to move between an A and a B team over the first few games. However, we will be looking at “fixing” the teams by early November to allow for the coaches to start working on team building and development.

The tournament itself will require a commitment from the boys and parents. Please do not expect to drop the boys off and disappear for the day – we need everyone to get involved; from helping with drinks, looking after the kit, first aid to scoring, umpiring etc. Everyone will be rostered to do something – this really is a complete team commitment! If you do not think you can help out, it is better to know now than at the tournament.
